Thank you for your interest in advertising with the Desert Bar Association. We currently offer classified ads on our website. The cost for a classified ad rate for a member is $50.00/month and non-member rates are $75.00/month.

The classified ads are text only, with the ability to hyperlink to email addresses, other websites and files for downloading. The text should be brief and to the point, providing the essential information and some contact information for people to use to find out more. Although we do not have a word limit, we ask that these be reasonably brief.

    Position Summary

    The Assistant City Attorney will provide sound and ethical legal advice applicable to municipal law and will act as an open and transparent collaborator with the ability to work tactfully and creatively toward solutions that may require bold, strategic action. Serving at the pleasure of the City Manager and under the general direction of the City Attorney, the Assistant City Attorney will represent the City in litigation, mediation, and negotiation and will provide advisory legal services to City Council, the City Manager, City departments, and various boards, committees, and commissions.  The Assistant City Attorney will enforce the Charter, ordinances and policies of the City of Palm Springs through the administrative citation process and in the courts. In addition, the position assists in oversight of outside counsel who provide legal services in special matters. The Assistant City Attorney will establish a shared City vision and work collaboratively and cooperatively with other City departments. An individual with sophisticated interpersonal skills, as well as seasoned political and legal acumen to ensure sensitivity to complex political realities while remaining strictly politically neutral, will excel in this position.


    Examples of Essential and General Responsibilities

    Performs research and prepares written and oral opinions on legal issues for the City Council, City departments, and various boards, committees, and commissions.
    Provides advice and opinions to City staff on matters of City urgency on a day-to-day basis as various needs arise to facilitate efficient processing of time sensitive documents, instruments, and legal needs.
    Assists in prosecution of violations of City ordinances, and representation of the City in all actions.
    Prepares, reviews, and drafts ordinances, resolutions, staff reports, policies, agreements, instruments, and pleadings.
    Approves exceptions and modifications to model agreements/contracts.
    Represents the Office of the City Attorney at various City Council, board, and commission meetings, and in court as directed.
    Appears before courts, at administrative proceedings, hearings, mediations, and negotiations on behalf of the City.
    Provides first level oversight of outside counsel in litigation ranging from simple to highly sensitive.
    Assists the City Attorney with respect to the acquisition, sale, transfer, or abandonment of real property including acceptance of deeds on behalf of the City.
    Supports the City Attorney regarding elections, special assessment districts, and bond issues.
    Investigates assigned litigated claims and complaints against the City and recommend appropriate action.
    Participates in the selection of assigned staff; provides or coordinates staff training; prepares and conducts evaluations; motivates and mentors staff; resolves personnel concerns and issues.
    Collaborates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, and priorities for assigned functions and programs; recommends and implements resulting policies and procedures.
    Contributes in development and administration of the City Attorney departmental budget; submits budget recommendations; monitors expenditures and outside legal fees.
    Responds to and resolves internal and external concerns, questions, and problems; contacts departments involved; provides direction and assistance as necessary to correct issues.
    Ensures, monitors, and implements compliance with all Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, and other compliance programs.
    Plays a part in city wide programs and initiatives as assigned; meets with City staff and provide guidance on legal issues; serves as staff on a variety of boards, commissions, and committees.
    Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends, developments and innovations.
    Responds to public and media inquiries as assigned; resolves difficult and sensitive concerns and complaints.
    Drafts and writes bulletins, newsletters, and other public information.
    Serves as Acting City Attorney in the absence of the City Attorney as assigned and directed.
    Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.


    Minimum and Preferred Requirements

    Minimum requirements must be clearly demonstrated on the application to be considered, however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to compete further in the selection process.  Experience requirements must be demonstrated in the "Work Experience" section of the application, other sections of the application will not be used to determine experience qualifications. (One year of work experience is the equivalent of 12 months of full-time work. "Full-time work" means at least 36 hours of work over a period of one week or 1,872 hours of work over a period of at least 12 months.) Qualifications noted as "desirable" or "preferred" are not included as part of the minimum requirements.

    Experience:
    A minimum of four years of increasingly responsible experience, seven years preferred, in the practice of law which included a minimum of three years working on behalf of a municipal government is required.
     
    Education and Training:
    Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association with a Juris Doctorate is required.
     
    License or Certificates:
    Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver license is required.
    Membership in the State Bar of California and admission to practice law in federal court is required.

    Working Conditions:
    This position works in an office environment with exposure to computers and peripherals and may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking, and standing for prolonged periods.

    Must successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation.

    The basic duty of a law office manager is to ensure the office is running smoothly.   We are looking for a candidate who possesses the ability to manage business functions as well as the overall operations of a law office, including legal assistant supervision.     Responsibilities will include the following:

    Financial Management

    Financial reporting, general ledger accounting, billing and collections, cash flow control, banking relationships, investment, tax planning, tax reporting, trust accounting, payroll, pension plans and other financial management functions.

    Systems and Operations Management

    Information services, records management, library management, office automation, document construction systems, information storage and retrieval, telecommunications, litigation support, legal practice systems and other systems management functions. Including strategic and tactical planning, business development, risk management, quality control, organizational development, firm planning processes and other general management functions.

    Required Skills and Abilities

    Can identify and analyze complex issues and problems in management areas, and recommend and implement solutions. Can manage office functions economically and efficiently, organize work, establish priorities and maintain good interpersonal relations and communications with lawyers and support staff. Displays excellent supervisory and leadership skills. Demonstrates willingness and ability to delegate.  Litigation paralegals must be highly organized and pay close attention to details. It is their job to ensure that all necessary documentation for a trial or arbitration is obtained and organized, all necessary court documents are timely prepared and filed, and all exhibits are prepared and readily available.

    Additional job responsibilities include:

    • Performing initial case file set-up and organizing and tracking case files.

    • Building and maintaining databases and files.

    • Ensuring that copies of documentation are properly filed and distributed.

    • Preparing and delivering correspondence.

    • Proofreading and filing of pleadings and effecting service of same.

    • Calendaring dates and deadline reminders.

    • Establishing chronology of events facts and events.

    • Locating and interviewing witnesses and preparing selected witnesses for trial.

    • Researching aspects of the case for purposes of discovery and assisting in the preparation

    of discovery, including interrogatories, request for admissions and request for production

    of documents.

    • Coordinating with experts.

    • Assisting lawyers in the courtroom.

    • Maintaining confidentiality.
