For more than 40 years, the legal community has come together annually to roast itself, while showing off some talented (and not so talented) lawyers, judges, legal secretaries, court clerks, office staff, and their family members. The Bird Awards and Distinguished Judges Night includes a cocktail hour, dinner, an awards presentation and a parody show – usually involving musical numbers – which incorporates a law-related theme and lyrics about lawyers and the court. The Bench-Bar collegiality for this event in the Desert is unparalleled.

In addition to the parody show, comical “Bird awards” in the form of a roadrunner are given out to members of the legal community for funny or strange things they have done over the prior year. It has been said that the “Bird Award” is “the most coveted award in the known universe, far more valuable than the Oscar, the Emmy, or even the Nobel Prize!”

This signature DBA event was started in 1978, with only a dinner and the awards. The following year, the parody show was added to the event, with short sketches presented by a small group of lawyers, who created the story lines, the scenes and the costumes and sets of the show to produce this unique form of entertainment.
