PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I am proud to be part of the wonderful community of lawyers and judges in the Desert, and the Desert Bar Association is a fine reflection of that spirit of camaraderie.  We all owe a debt of gratitude to our predecessors on the Board of Trustees and their efforts to build the Desert Bar Association into the organization that it is today. I am proud to serve with such a talented group of individuals as our current Board of Trustees, and I look forward to working with each one of them going forward to build on the foundation that our predecessors have prepared for us.

We live in interesting times in which civility in public discourse seems to be on the wane.  Courtesy and civility have the same virtue and importance in our profession as they have in our greater society.  In the legal profession, we are a reflection of the world in which we live, but that does not mean that we cannot lead by example.  Lawyers and judges have an obligation to be positive role models for litigants and observers of our court system.  I would encourage anyone in our profession who cherishes these principles to consider becoming involved in the American Inns of Court.  The Coachella Valley is the home of the Warren Slaughter/Richard Roemer Inn of Court, Chapter 35.  You have to be invited, but the Inns are always looking for new people to bring into its membership to continue to inspire excellence in our profession.  If you are interested in receiving an invitation to the Inn, please ask any of our current Board of Trustees, and we can point you in the right direction.

I hope to see the Desert Bar Association renew its dedication to charity and public service.  Make no mistake, the DBA has never shirked its responsibility to encourage pro bono legal services and give back to the community that we serve.  We have a regular “Lawyer in the Library” program which helps those in the community whose need for legal advice exceeds their means to pay.  The Desert Bar Association has also continued its involvement in outreach programs and moot court competitions in schools to inspire young people to appreciate and pursue careers in the law.  Please join the Desert Bar Association in attending our upcoming events, continuing these worthy programs, and please consider volunteering with us as well to give back to our community.
